KARAGÖZ and HACİVAT ,A Turkish shadow play
Karagöz and Hacivat is a Turkish shadow play taking ıts name from its main character Karagöz.Turkish traveller Evliya Çelebi says that the play was the first performened at the Ottoman palaces in the late 14th century.Some others say that this play came into Anatolia afterv Yavuz Sultan Selim who conquered Egypt in 1517 ,had the brought the shadow play artists to his court.According to Legend,they were workingas construction workers in a mosque in Bursa.Although their satiric jokes entertained other worker sit also held up the building of the mosque by their constant joking together.As a result it made the sultan angry and anxious about whether Karagöz and Hacivat could encourage rebellion in others ,so they were executed.The construction of mosque without them,but thir comrades didn't forget them and kept their jokes alive,telling themover and over.In time,The adventures of Karagöz and Hacivat gained a new dimension and Turkish shadow puppets theatre was born.Their monumental tomb stands in Bursa today.The main characters of the play are of course Karagöz and Hacıvat.Karagöz represents the public morals and common sense,the ordinary man in the street,and is straightforwardand reliable.He is almost illiterate,usually unemployed and embarks on money projects that never work.He is often kind of rude.You can recognize him by his turban ,his bald head and his black beard.His left arm is longer than the other one.His friend Hacivat instead is the opposite of him.He is educatedin a moslem theologyschool speaks Ottaman Turkish and uses poetical and literary language.He is very clever as well.they could be accommodated in public squares,at national and religious festivals,at weddings,circumcision and ceremony (Turkish mean is sünnet)and fairs in the yrds of inns ,in cofee houses ,in taverns and private residences.The plays had little or no actions,depending for laughs on lively slapsticks and on monologues or dialogues involving puns ,ready responses,crude practical jokes,double meanings,misunderstandings ,and interpolated quips.There were clearly formulated rules of intonation.Performances were often include with songs or dances ,or both.
HACİVAT: Dear,you still misunderstood.Anyway l will tell you how you will behave in villa.For example,lf you go to a strange house,you don't enter house directly ,do you?
KARAGÖZ:Ok,ok .l will open a handkerchief and wait in front of home.
HACİVAT:No no .Firstly you will hit the door.
KARAGÖZ:Hitting is easy or door is broken
HACİVAT:You don't kick the door.Have you got hands?
KARAGÖZ: l left my hands at home incase l start to job.
HACİVAT: Don't make joke.You will hit the door with your hands.
KARAGÖZ: lf your friend call a police because Karagöz stole the door.
HACİVAT: Let the favor of God!lt means you will hit the door only tık, tık.,KARAGöZ:Ok ok l can do it.
HACiVAT:Well done.What will you do you heard a voice come in
KARAGÖZ: l will shout "you come"
HACİVAT: lt can't be so.you will open the door slowly and you will enter in house.What will you do then?
KARAGÖZ: What l found in that house,l will take them in my sack.
HACİVAT: Don't do it.Karagöz.
KARAGÖZ: l will leave half of them you.Hacı cav cav.
KARAGÖZ: God ,you Don't steal anything.Man waits you in his room.
KARAGÖZ: What will happen now?
HACİVAT: You will close the door and greet him.
KARAGÖZ: lf he didn't greet me ,l will slap.
HACİVAT: l give up this work.l understand that you will make me crazy.
KARAGÖZ: Ok,we can change our beard,so you will go there instead of me.
